In the last Energy Boost episode number 12 I discussed the importance of getting more fermented probiotic foods into your diet to improve your overall health and energy, because of their added benefits beyond supplemental probiotics. The exception being, if you are trying to heal a specific illness like thrush or Crohn’s disease, utilizing a targeted probiotic strain with demonstrated efficacy in that condition may be the most effective approach.

It's fantastic to be consuming fermented foods, but in order for the probiotics to flourish in your gut they require the assistance of prebiotics, which is a term many people are still unsure of. This group of indigestible carbohydrates play a pivotal role in ensuring that we feel energized and healthy on a daily basis.

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • What are prebiotics and why are they so important for probiotics (the good bacteria)
  • The health benefits of consuming prebiotics
  • What are the 3 main types of prebiotics
  • Why resistance starch is so important
  • How prebiotics can help with weight loss
  • How to incorporate prebiotics naturally into your diet
  • Possible side effects of consuming prebiotics.

I’m a believer of doing things naturally, hence why I like consuming fermented or cultured foods as an important step to help cultivate a healthy gut and overall health. Low levels of beneficial bacteria and high levels of pathogenic (or bad) bacteria in the gut have been linked to everything from depression to diabetes and weight gain. This means that maintaining healthy gut flora is crucial to promoting optimal health, even if you don’t have any digestive symptoms. And I know that even though many of you listening consume fermented foods already, especially yoghurt I imagine, there are still lots of people who aren’t really aware of all the other types of fermented foods out there and their important health benefits beyond what plain natural yoghurt with live or active cultures can deliver.

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • What are fermented or cultured foods
  • Why fermented foods are so beneficial for our health and energy levels
  • Why you should eat a variety of fermented foods rather than just plain yoghurt
  • What yoghurt should say on the label to ensure you are getting probiotic benefits
  • 5 Reasons why you should incorporate more fermented foods into your diet
  • Possible side effects of consuming fermented foods or probiotics.

So far in this WEB episode series (check out Part1 & Part2) of “Is Organic Food Better For You” we’ve looked at the definition of what certified organic means, how to identify a product that is truly certified organic when shopping and that when it comes to overall nutritional value, freshly picked organic fruits and vegies are better for you than non organic because of the increased quantities of antioxidants that you’ll be consuming.

So now in Part3 of the series, we’re going to look at “What are the risks associated with non organic food” because the risks are what can potentially have the biggest effect on our energy levels and overall wellbeing.

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • How organic compares to non-organic when looking at concentrations of the toxic heavy metal cadmium
  • Why cadmium is such a concern for our health
  • The incredible reduction in pesticide residue in people's urine that results from eating organic produce for a week
  • How the exposure to pesticide residue in foods impacts our health
  • How organic chicken and pork reduces your exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria

So in the last WEB episode 06 of this “Is Organic Food Better For You” series we looked at the definition of what certified organic means, which included terms such as produce grown free from synthetic chemical pesticides, herbicides, sewage, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics and Genetically Modified Organisms. And then I described the markings or logos that you should become familiar with to ensure that the produce you are purchasing is certified organic such as the USDA logo in the United States or the NASAA logo in Australia.

In this episode we look at one of the most often debated topics surrounding organic foods; whether or not they are more nutritious for you compared to so called conventional foods or non organic foods.

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • How organic compares to non-organic if only comparing essential nutrients (nutrients that are essential to our survival)
  • The best way to get the most nutritious produce you can get
  • How organic fruits and vegetables compare with their non-organic counterparts in terms of antioxidants
  • The role antioxidants play in our energy levels
  • If considering all nutritional value researched, which is best - organic or non-organic?

In the last WEB03 episode I discussed how the simple ritual of drinking water first thing in the morning leads to more energy. But what about taking it to another level? Part of my ritual is adding lemon or lime to the water and I do that for a few reasons. One of the main reasons is simply because I like the taste of it and how it leaves my mouth feeling refreshed and clean and also it seems to settle my tummy if it’s not feeling quite right. But I wanted to know what science has to say about it and in this episode you'll learn exactly how lemon or lime water will energize you

In this episode you’ll discover:

  • How lemon or lime water will help keep your skin, tendons and ligaments healthy
  • How it will assist to maintain and repair cartilage and bones
  • How it may assist in reducing the aging process
  • The process for decreasing the risk of kidney stones
  • How it aids digestion and general gut health
  • How it can assist in reducing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy
